Berlin Wild
Solo Exhibition by Petra Branke
Berlin has long served as a canvas for rebellion, reinvention, and freedom. Through the lens of Petra Branke, the city reveals its raw and restless essence. Over more than two decades, Branke, affectionately known as the “Hip-Hop Granny,” has documented the emergence of hip-hop, graffiti, and street culture in Berlin. Her images trace a visual history that began with the new millenial and continues to evolve in the present day.
Branke’s approach to photography is grounded in presence and bears witness to lived experience. As a participant and observer within the scenes she captured an unfiltered view of generations that claimed public space as a form of identity, protest, and expression.
At a time when Berlin’s creative edges are increasingly shaped by economic forces and urban redevelopment, Branke’s photographs remind us of the city’s roots in defiance and diversity. They serve as both archive and attitude, juxtaposing youth and authority, rebellion and conformity, chaos and order, visualizing the social and cultural tensions that accompanied Berlin’s transformation after reunification.
This exhibition celebrates Branke’s long-standing commitment to documenting a culture often overlooked by traditional institutions. Her work embodies the authenticity of direct engagement, revealing a Berlin that continues to breathe freedom through its streets, walls, and people.
For nearly two decades, Petra Branke has been capturing what often goes unnoticed, guided by an unfailing sense for the moment and a compassionate eye for the everyday. She calls herself a curious observer, inspired by people, places, and the pulse of Berlin.
Her fascination with the city’s street art scene led her to explore Berlin by bike, discovering new images on walls, bridges, and facades. Over time, she developed her distinctive documentary style: close, honest, and unpolished. Her photographs reflect the rhythm of the city, its movement and transformation, and the traces people leave behind.
